I just finished reading
Escape by Carolyn Jessop. This book details her life in as a member of the Fundamentalist Church of the Latter Day Saints, and how she escaped with 8 children from her polygamist relationship with her husband, Merril Jessop. It was unbelievable to me how so many people could live in the 21st century sheltered from society, and continue to survive under the strict rule of this cult. I know there are a lot of disfunctional families around, but the dynamics of 5 wives and 30 children living under one roof was really unbelievable. After reading her account I realize how hard it would be to give up everything you were taught, and start all over in the real world. I wouldn't recommend carrying this under your arm if you were living in Utah, but I think it is a real eye-opener, and an interesting read.

That's cool that you were reading that-- I just finished Under the Banner of Heaven by John Krakauer. It's also about the FLDS, in fact, I think she's even in it.
I think the hard part for me was learning about the LDS church and thinking "well that sounds crazy!" but then wondering how I knew what I believed was any less crazy. And yeah, so much of my faith comes from my life experiences and how I was raised. Heck, even sunday school from when I was little. I still think my religion makes more sense though ;-)
I might have to pick this one up sometime.
It looks like an interesting read. I am amazed that people think it is a good thing to remove themselves from society that way.
It is hard for me to comprehend this way of thinking. I know there are many disfunctional families these days and the pain is extrememly deep. The God we know only loves. He must be very sad at times though, at some of the choices we make. I'm not sure I could read this book. But I am half-way through "The Shack" by William P. Young, and I do recomment it. Can't put it down. Its a best seller!
