classmates at Hidden Springs!!

For 14 years Betty and Rudi Rudicel have attended Hidden Springs church. Their daughter, Carolyn Adams is a teacher at school and her daughter Erin was on the puppet team. Last week I found out Rudi graduated from High School with mom!! His wife Betty graduated the year after mom. He barely remembered mom, but he did know Shirley Jenson, and of course he knew Bob Selick! He used to play baseball with him. It was so much fun talking about their class and school, Rudi ran home and found the 1940 Southeastern High School Yearbook! It was fun seeing her picture and talking about mom. He calls me cousin now. Such a nice man. (His wife Betty died 3 weeks ago.) Who else do you remember mom talking about in High School? What a small world! Miss you all, Love, Nan

Cherry Fun

It was so much fun having Gabe and Lori here last week, and there was lots to celebrate. Gabe sold his Acura RSX to a guy in Las Vegas on Monday and got a job offer from Thompson-Reuter on Friday. We cracked open a bottle of the bubbly to celebrate the job offer. After 4 interviews, and a few weeks of waiting, the celebration was in order. They left this morning, Gabe dropping Lori at Ft. Lauderdale airport and then starting the drive back to Michigan in his Honda Fit.

5/3 Riverbank Run

Today was the "Big One" in Grand Rapids - the Riverbank run - it's a 25K (15.5 mile) run.

First some back ground: It rained like crazy last night, I kept watching the radar through the night, and I was convinced it would be a soggy run…But when I got down stairs I turned on the news, and the weather girl said all the rain would be to the north of us and it would be dry for the run. Woo Hoo! I left any kind of rain gear and warm up shirts at home - BUT DANG HER… It rained like crazy for the start of the run and the first hour or so. I don’t know if it would have made a difference, but I think I would have been a little warmer at the start if I’d have been better prepared.

Also, I pretend that I am really not into my running times…I never wear a watch or time myself when running. But, in the back of my head I always have goals. So I publicly stated I’d like to run a 2:10 for the 25K, but 8 minute miles (a 2:04) would have been nice, but I really, really would have loved to break 2 hours for the run (my best time ever for this run is 1:56 – but that was 9 years ago.)

So at the start, I positioned myself near the 8:00 minute pace runner. When the starting horn went off I felt great!! I have been battling knee problems all spring and this was first day that both knees were good! No pain at all - I was fired up! I went past the 8:00 minute pacer and figured if I was going to break 2 hours, the time to go is now! No way I could just hang with the 8:00 pace and gain 4 minutes at the end. So I pushed it and I felt really good, at least for the first 6 miles…everyone knows the rest of the story…I was slowing down mile by mile, then the 8:00 minute pace group passed me at 11 miles. My thighs were just killing me - I had to slow down.

I struggled to keep the 8:00 group in sight, but it was too late…they were gone. I was bummed that I went out too fast and couldn’t finish strong – I do that so often! Some day I am hoping the knowledge of my old age will kick in and I’ll pace myself better – after a mile of lamenting, I remembered my first 2:10 goal and started watching the splits and knew I could make it. I crossed the finish line at 2:08:06 (an 8:16 min/mile pace). My thighs were super tight at the finish – I knew I left it all on the course. (And 6 hours they’re still killing me!)

Guess I better get over the stigma of running for time and get me a watch! In the end, I was happy with my run today - Thanks for listening to me babble!

Beer Tally

Shawn and I were trading notes on Facebook - I mentioned I learned the word "showpy" for draft beer and she asked me how many I had...It was my first, but I told her I didn't know I had to keep track!
Just then, a waiter walked by and handed me another showpy. I could have turned it down, but I figured what the heck, the night was young, I motioned that I would take the beer...Soon after, he came back woth a tally sheet! He must have heard me talkng about keeping track. I had two (as you can see) and then I thought I better head back to the hotel.
I like the tally system, it's a pretty good way to keep track of your showpy consumption.

Here's a picture of the yellow orchid Ron and I got from the new Meijers in Gaylord. This is kind of a spidery looking orchid called Oncidium Orchid...better known as spidery yellow flower. Good news...I found my favorite "Love Lies Bleeding flower seeds at (of all places) GLEN's in Gaylord. We LOVE that store! It's just like the new V.G.'s!!!
I've been having a ball combining the Ackerman, Verrette, Grantner, Rathbun timeline. It's unbelievable at a few of the dates that are exactly the same day of the year. Like the day that Lida was killed in the car accident happened to be the day of Hilda and Fred Verrette's wedding anniversary. The day that went into active duty was the same date as Kathleen Grantner's birthday-August 11th. (And that happens to be Tom Cook's birthday for those of you who remember him. I don't know why, but his birthday always stuck in my head.) I always remember goofy things like that.

Does anyone notice anything different in the Floer kitchen? No more birds! That's right...we took them down when we had our dentist appointments last week and thought we'd kill two birds with one stone (get the pun?) Actually 11 birds. we got $100.00 for the small cage and canaries and one finch. Bye-Bye birdies. We can't believe how quiet it is in the house. Another chapter closed.
Amen. We learned a lot about their mating habits and it was interesting seeing what kind of bird would hatch out of that tiny little shell.
