the weekend! Finally!

Here's another puppy picture. Something about it-- bare feet, green
grass-- it's like summer! Nevermind the shivering puppies and
murmurings of frozen dog water bowls... It was in the 60's this
afternoon but I hear it was 30 in the hills this morning. Winter's
coming, I tell ya!

Things are good up here. Work is busy, life's been pretty uneventful
(but good!). Brian and I have been alternating visits... in a week
and a half I go to Vegas and he goes to Kodiak (an island of big,
smelly bears). I will be gone for a weekend but he'll be gone for 5
weeks! I'm planning on visiting so that should be fun.

That's about it from here! Mom and Dad are on another epic bike ride,
no doubt! I can't wait to hear about it when they get back! I've got
some sewing to do so I better sign off. Love you all!

ask...

And you shall receive!

This is my favorite picture of our own "hottest governor."

Political differences aside, I think she's a pretty cool chick. I
know this is probably a publicity shoot or whatever but she's wearing
a "kuspuk" (I had to google it) which is a cloth parka (it's a Yup'ik
word but I think other natives wear them too) and holding her baby.
She had the baby and got back to work 3 days later but she totes him
around everywhere. (not that I'd do that, but it's cool, I guess)
She was in Barrow (on the Arctic Ocean) and the story was about the
rising food prices. Also she's always got BIG hair and she posed for
Vogue (hottest governor title).

So there ya go, Alaskan information of the day!

Did anyone see Obama's speech last night? ;-)

Inside Scoop, Please?

Surely someone in the family, (I wonder who), could give us some info on the real Sarah Palin. Who is this woman? We trust your judgement, give us the inside scoop before it hits the media.

I'm not sure if I posted this already, but here's the puppy palace. If you look close, you'll see that Rusty and Ruby are sound asleep on the deck. The back dog houses are fully insulated and have aeromatic cedar chips on the floor. Ruby has planted a little plastic tulip garden on her side of the house. I want to find some of those colored stepping stones like the ones behind Grandma Traxler's house to be place as a walkway up to the pen. I'm so excited because Nancy and Joe are coming for a short visit this Saturday. The cards will be flying! YaHoo! I can't wait. Game Day anyone?

Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversery

Just look at our wonderful big sister, taking care of all of us. You are the best Sally. Let's have a retake of this one!! OK, I'm so excited to finally be on the bloglist, I have celeberated all our August important dates! The other two blogs got lost, (1 for sister Sal, and the other for the Boudins) so I included them all on one page. I can't wait to see if this works. Thanks for your patience, I'm not sure why I was a short term blogger. But now I am here to stay. I have been enjoying all of the family blogs, but could never figure out why I wasn't showing up on your lists.. . . you know, middle kid, left out. . . HA! I'm back!!! Love you all, Nan

You'll have to zoom in a bit on this one, but Ron and I went to the air show in Alpena. We ended up getting drenched. After all the planning and advertising, we had a heck of a storm go through midway into the event. Most people left, but the show went on after an hour delay. They were expecting 15,000 people. Alpena hasn't had an air show in 30 years. I enjoyed trying see if any pictures would turn out with my little Kodak. Just another day in the life...
Speaking of life, I plan on being baptised in October. You're all welcome to attend the blessed event. It will probably be the 19th. Can I get an "Amen"?

We survived the storm!!!

hello to all from MELBOURNE, FL!!!
mike and i made it through tropical storm Fay...we were truly singing Fay Fay go away...
it was pretty bad around here last week. flooding everywhere. i had to leave my car at the community pool on wed. night and walk home through the floods. they were thigh high at some points, it was not fun to do after working all day. our house stayed dry, the road in front of our house was flooded up to the top of the side walk. when i was walking home from work through the water, the winds were blowing so fast that there were white caps in the road. it was crazy. Fay took forever to leave us. even yesterday we were getting winds and rain! she moved at 2 miles per hour over our county.
i wish i wouldn't have lost our camera i could have pictures for you guys...but i am sure you've seen it in the news. i just think its awful how the news casters have to stand in the deepest of water and make it look so bad. i mean it was bad, but...ya know how they are.
other than fay...everything is well here! just working and playing...
oh yeah...mike signed up for a hockey league, he plays on Friday and Sunday nights...its a lot of fun to go and watch him play...except his games are so late! his game on Friday was at 1130PM, and tonight it is at 1045pm! i am going to try to go, at least i don't have to work in the morning.
see i could even post pics. of mike playing hockey...if i could only find the camera! i did such a great job at cleaning my house one day, i cant seem to find where i put it!!
any ways!!!
i hope this finds everyone well!!!
miss you all and love you too!!!

O.K. so this isn't a canary of mine, but I sold two canaries and a bird cage tonight! Plus the lady wants to barter for two more canaries by painting a picture of Rusty and Ruby. Although I haven't seen her work yet, my co-worker (our internal auditor) is best friends with her. Kathy says she is an excellent painter. Pretty cool, eh! I'll still have 9 birds. Ron said Bruce might want a couple. The pups are doing great. It's going to take a little longer to train them since there's two...I think they get a little distracted at times. But they're learning each day, and we're figuring out their body language a little more each day. The next picture I send will be a picture of the lavish three-story dog pen and house. I think I might move in. I just landscaped it a little more today. It now has two hanging flowers that adorn the front entrance.
Love,
Sue

Vegas!

The bachelor and bachelorette parties are over, and it's not too soon to start getting very excited about the wedding/vacation/family reunion coming up in just a few more weeks in Las Vegas. Here is a link to Gabe and Lori's Vegas website: http://x94cherry.googlepages.com/home. It is filled with all kinds of great info that you will want to have handy for the trip; great dining suggestions, excellent gambling tips, and info on tourist attractions you won't want to miss. The best part is, it has a whole cheapskate section, I guess the apple (or in this case the Cherry) doesn't fall too far from the tree. I think you will find it interesting. Me? I'm going to see if I can find a copy of "Black Jack for Dummies" and start reading it now! I can't wait.

Are your palms sweating?

This past weekend two friends from work, Ben and George, went to Las Vegas for the weekend. We had to make sure it was suitable for a good 'ol fashioned Rathbun wedding. I think it'll be fine ;) . We got into vegas at about 9:30 on friday night, I blew about $50 on slots and roulette. Saturday we hung out by the pool all day, had a few cocktails and met some girls vacationing from the UK. Saturday night I fared a bit better, and won $35 in blackjack. We stayed at Circus Circus, which I think a lot of the film Vegas Vacation was filmed at. It all looked very familiar. I didn't win any cars though...

Sunday we drove out to the Hoover dam, which is just outside the city. It was really neat to experience. We walked all the way across and back, but didn't take any dam tours... They're building a bridge downriver from the dam, it looks like it should be pretty spectacular.

Did you see Mom is an Olympic athlete!?! I saw it on NBC's website, and had to share!

http://www.nbcolympics.com/athletes/athlete=619/bio/index.html

My blog is really jumping from one topic to the next-- I'm really tired, but I thought I should fill you in on recent/future happenings. This saturday I'm flying to Los Angeles to spend some time with Tim and Christen, who's wedding I was in back in may. I also have an interview with a mining engineering consulting firm (norwest corporation) for a full-time job in Vancouver, Canada, so I'll most likely fly from LA to Vancouver after my stay with the newlyweds, and back to Denver (where I'm flying out of originally...), and then driving back to Houghton. Did you catch all that? Theres more... after spending a few days in houghton I'm then taking a trip to Isle Royale to do some backpacking! And then school starts again! Pretty crazy, huh? It should be fun though.

So tired! Time for bed! Love you guys!

And If You See Andrea Boudin...

would ya wish her a Happy Birthday! 8-8-83. Can you believe it? Could that little girl really be 25 years old? Hope you have a great day, Andrea. Your Aunt Sally and Uncle Bill love you and so does the whole rest of the family!

Hot Diggity Dog!

My 'Tister Tuttie Toot is coming for a visit on Sept 27th! We will be celebrating every birthday on or near that time while she is here, and we will also work on taking better self-portrait photos than the one that I'm posting today. Anyone else want to join in the fun? We'd love to have you. I think this will be the first time that Sue has visited that she hasn't had to sleep on a blow up air matress, and will have her own bedroom, but don't worry, we won't let her sleep in too late.

The Joseph S. Fay Shipwreck

This is the shipwreck I was trying to tell you about at 40 Mile Point, north of Rogers City. We went there with Sue and Ron on our Northern Michigan trip. Here is the history of it, for anyone who has time to read it. (Too bad Grandpa Traxler isn't here, he'd love it).
October 19, 1905. Heavy seas. The Fay with the Rhodes in tow departed from Escanaba, Michigan and were downbound on Lake Huron. Destination -- Ashtabula, Ohio. Both boats were fully loaded with iron ore. The captain hugged the coast seeking some protection from the violent wind and savage waves. The wind shifted violently, whipping inland. The Fay was being swept to shore! The seasoned captain turned toward open water desperately trying to gain control of his ship. The straining towline tightened, pulling taut. The ships rolled in opposite directions and the Rhodes broke free taking a portion of the Fay’s stern with her.

Suddenly free, the Fay gained some forward movement, but she was now sinking. Water rushed into the hull. The fires in the boilers would be extinguished leaving the boat powerless and adrift. Cold, wet and nearly frozen, the crew crowded into the forward cabin. The captain struggled to bring the Fay around and head to shore toward 40 Mile Point Light Station.

It was a close race, but the Fay made it. Her bow struck a sandbar and the entire forward cabin was torn off. The wheelhouse, deck, mate’s and captain’s rooms were ripped from the deck. Incredibly, huge waves lifted the structure and carried it to shore where it washed up on the sandy beach near the light station. The captain and 10 crewmen were safe inside. In fact, one of the crewmen was reported to be asleep and didn’t even wake up!

First Mate David Syze of Port Huron and two other crewmen weren’t so fortunate. Clinging to the beached hull, the struggling men ripped off a spar and used it to paddle to shore. The first mate attempted to swim, but was overcome by the cold and was lost.

The lighthouse keeper’s log for October 20, 1905 simply reads: “At 8:30 p.m. last night the steamer, J. S. Fay, came ashore here in a sinking condition. She soon broke up. Most of the crew came ashore on the Pilot House. Three men swam ashore, the mate was drowned.” The entry for December 4, 1905 reads: “The assistant found a dead man on the beach about 1 mile up. We think it is the mate of the Fay.”

The Rhodes and her entire crew survived, but it was the end for the Fay. She eventually broke up on the sand bar and sank in about 12 feet of water. But, if you visit 40 Mile Point Light Station and stroll up the beach about 200 yards, you can see some 150 feet of her huge wooden side, metal rods and spikes holding her steady, resting in the sand.

Could it be????

Shawn's perfect combo...The Gladiators were on Family Feud tonight.

It sure made for great TV!  (jim rolls his eyes) and you get Al Rooker to boot!
